The Property – Greater Kruger

Welcome to Tamanini Timbavati, located a stone’s throw away from the Timbavati and Klaserie Private Game Reserves. The lodge is set in a beautiful garden close to the Klaserie River. The lodge offers guests, seclusion, peaceful bush sounds at night, fantastic hospitality, and traditional South African food.
Tamannini Timbavati- is a lodge close to the gateway to this prestigious private game reserve. The lodge is located within the reserve so there’s always a chance that anyone of the Big 5 may just walk by your chalet. The lodge does have a fence, but only at elephant height to keep them out of the beautiful grounds.

Accommodation

There are three spacious family chalets, two of which have two bedrooms each, and one has a capacity for six guests. Each chalet has a dining set up and a lounge area with easy chairs and a coffee table. Most guests will spend time relaxing outdoors on the patio watching antelope and birding. The other accommodation comprises three chalets that have a capacity of two guests each.

We have an outdoor lounge area under an umbrella as well as a lounge in the main lodge on the upper level. There is a boma with a fire pit and camp chairs where we eat evening meals. There is also an indoor dining room and bar.
The garden has some hammocks and a day bed and a small splash pool. The tents have a small furnished wooden deck out the front. There is electricity in the tents and the main building as well as peripheral soft lighting shining outwards from the camps extent.

Game Drive Safaris and Bush Walks

Game drives are scheduled to take place when animals are most active, at dusk and at dawn. We have a large area to traverse, some 12000 ha ( nearly 30 000 acres) and the area is exciting and diverse with many different landscapes and features. All of the BIG FIVE animals are found in our area and we have a good chance of seeing them all.
The morning drives leave camp after a quick cup of coffee or tea with a traditional rusk to dunk, and so later we do stop for a coffee break with some cookies and fruit. In the afternoons we have a sundowner stop which is a quirky safari tradition, often involving a gin and tonic or glass of wine and snacks to toast the setting sun.
If requested before travel, we are able to offer walks with an armed and qualified guide instead of a morning game drive.

Dining

We offer an al fresco dining experience in our traditional boma with a fire pit and camp chairs. Depending on your preference, we also have the option of an indoor dining area and bar.

Pioneers in the Safari Game

Bruce and Judy are pioneers in the safari game having started in the early 1980s in Thornybush Game Reserve and then onto Timbavati where the couple took a two-year sabbatical from tourism and got stuck into some nitty gritty reserve management such as erosion work, burning programs, and managing animal numbers.

In 1988 they were awarded a concession in the then-unknown Manyeleti Game Reserve adjacent to the Orpen Gate of the Kruger National Park. They built and operated Khoka Moya Safari Camp from which they ran a walking safari in 1988 and in 1989 they opened Honeyguide Tented Safari Camp- then, the first luxury tented camp in South Africa. During their 10 years in the Manyeleti Game Reserve, they witnessed the fall of the fences and massive moves towards conservation efforts and themselves formed a volunteer programme for rhino monitoring and conservation.

Transfrontiers Wildlife Walking Safaris their next project was a much-needed product; walking trails in wild areas in the Greater Kruger stretching from Manyeleti in the south to the Limpopo along the border of the National Park and often in community-owned land. With a sense of fortune, they find themselves now in the Maseke Game Reserve a section of the Greater Kruger that has recently been awarded to the Maseke community.
